What is the difference between a web developer and a web designer?
A web developer by definition builds and maintains websites which is commonly called the back end. A web designer by definition will concept and design the look and feel of the site, commonly referred to as the front end. Some people use these terms interchangeably and sometimes people possess both skills and are able to handle a site from concept to code. It is not common to find someone who possesses both skills at an advanced level. In most cases when both skills are present they still possess a greater proficiency at one over the other.

– DHTML (Dynamic HTML)
– XML
– JavaScript
– CGI forms

What skills should a good web designer possess?
Good web designers have a strong background in graphic design and commercial art. Experience in building corporate identities and logo designs as well as various forms of print work is a good indicator the individual is truly a designer and has the ability to translate their art into different mediums not just one. Their work should show good use of color and spacial balance. It will be pleasing to the eye so you know where to look without feeling like everything on the page is hitting you at once.
How do I choose the right company to build my site?
Ideally you want to find a company who possesses all the talent mentioned above. A company who can handle the front end with the same level of professionalism as the back end. That will really streamline the process for you, If you find a company that possesses the web developer skills mentioned above and employs agency quality designers with background in print work as well as web then you know you’ve found yourself the right company to build your site. Otherwise you can hire an ad agency or high end graphic designer to do the the front end and hire a separate web developer to handle the back end.
